If you choose to make a purchase through these links I may earn a small commission—at no additional cost to you. Keeping a mudroom organized can be challenging, but a few tweaks can turn it into a stress-free space. Let’s dive into the top issues and some smart, simple solutions to keep your mudroom clutter-free and welcoming! The Clutter and the Mess The Problem: Don’t we hate to see clothes and shoes scattered everywhere. I mean, if you can manage to keep things tidy, why can’t everyone else? But take a step back: sometimes, the problem isn't with people —it’s with the setup. In our family, I took a moment to reassess and noticed that it was unclear whose jacket hook was whose, and that the hangers were too high. Mudroom Solution: Create individualized spaces for each family member ! Give everyone a hook or two, a designated shoe spot , a bench area , and a pocket organizer or baskets for winter gear. Limit each person to two pairs of shoes in the mudroom; the rest can go in a closet or separate storage. To make it fun for kids, personalize each space with a name tag or photo. There are so many creative and fun label options kids will love! Personally, I got one of these stamps for each of my kids—they’re super handy for quick and easy labeling. Communication is the key to solving most problems . Take a minute to give the family a "mudroom tour". The kids will have a blast seeing the changes you've made, at identifying their spots with their own names and photos, AND you get to show off your newly discovered redesigning skills. The Storage Problem: The Endless Need for Space! The Problem: Doesn't it feel like storage space is too often a never-ending battle ?! Every so often, we find our closets, hangers, and shoe racks start to overflow . Things get hard to find, and there’s never quite enough space to keep everything in order. Despite adding bins, shelves, and hooks, the mudroom somehow turns into an overflowing collection of everyone’s: shoes, jackets and seasonal gear. It quickly becomes a chaotic mess—hard to organize and even harder to find what you need when you’re in a rush. Mudroom Solution: Add storage space: Start by installing overhead shelves for items you don’t need every day —think extra storage bins , off-season shoes, and holiday gear. Keep a foldable step ladder nearby to make these high shelves easily accessible when you do need them. Click on image to see similar styles on Amazon Choose what stays and what goes: Keep only the basics in your mudroom. Limit each person to 1 or 2 jackets, a pair of shoes, and one or two essentials like hats and gloves. This way, everything has a place, and nothing is spilling over. If it’s getting crowded, it’s a sign that the mudroom might need a little declutter. Move the extras to another closet, a separate shoe rack or storage spot. Choose what STAYS and what GOES... for GOOD! Now, let me tell you... No matter how many hooks and shoe racks you add, no matter how many storage units you squeeze in your home, things just keep piling up!! It’s inevitable—think of all the clothes, toys, and home items we accumulate over time! Which is why... DECLUTTERING is the secret ! So, YES—keep only the items you use daily. The rest, store in another cabinet. BUT my personal favorite secret is... (drumroll)... Give away, throw way, let go! Ask yourself: “Have I used this in the last 6–12 months?” If not, chances are you won’t use it anytime soon, either! It is time for it to get adopted by a different home, if in good condition, of course. Otherwise, thank it for its service and bid it farewell! The Lack of Personal Space The Problem: No matter how much I decluttered, organized and personalized our spaces, we often felt like we're stumbling over each other , or waiting impatiently someone to move . We'd installed hangers for each of us, even a bench to sit and put the shoes on. With some observation I noticed the kids were sitting on the stairs to put their shoes on, making it impossible for me and my husband to pass and get ready without a traffic jam. Turns out the bench was too tall for them to sit on! Mudroom Solution: Adding 2 child-sized chairs made a world of difference—no more tripping hazards during busy mornings. Simple and effective! Sometimes all it takes is a simple observation and attention to the flow of your space. The Back-from-School Gear Left Lying Around The Problem: As our kids started bringing home more homework, I realized we had a “gear trail” problem : backpacks, lunch bags, and water bottles would be scattered from the garage to the kitchen, and each morning felt like a scavenger hunt. Mudroom Solution: Create specific spots for school bags, lunch bags, and water bottles, ideally in the kitchen or near homework areas. Make it part of the routine for kids to bring these items inside and put them in their designated spots. This way, homework is ready to go, lunch bags are ready for next morning’s lunch prep, and water bottles are cleaned and ready to be refilled—no more frantic morning searches. Outdoor Tools and Toys are Out of Hand The Problem: It’s wonderful to see everyone’s creativity and energy—whether my husband’s home projects or the kids’ outdoor play! But by the end of the day, tools, balls, helmets, and pool gear seem to turn into permanent decor. Should I nag them? Pick it up myself? Or let it pile up into an eyesore until I finally go nuclear?! Mudroom Solution: The toys: Create a designated space for outdoor toys by placing them in a box, basket, or bag—keeping them tidy and out of the way. Click here and check out these collapsible storage bins, perfect for outdoor toys and balls. With this setup, the kids know exactly where to leave their biking gear and where to store their toys. And if the new routine doesn’t stick? Time to bring out our favorite parenting techniques: a single reminder with a consequence, a little privilege adjustment, or whatever works best for your family. Personally, I’ve learned two things that make all the difference: (1) I don’t do tasks my kids can and should handle themselves, and (2) I won’t nag. I have my own techniques that seem to work well—the first being clearly labeled storage baskets and a simple, easy-to-follow process. The tools: As for the hubby? Well, adjusting our approach might just save us a night on the couch! I initially set up a box at the garage entrance with frequently-used tools: screwdrivers, screws, a stud finder, a cutter, a leveler—you get it. But as time passed, one box turned into four, each packed with duplicates, and more tools spread across the garage until there was no space for our cars. I tried reorganizing but soon realized it was best to let him handle it. Silence is key! After a few weeks, he began expressing frustration with the clutter. I chimed in with a supportive “I know!” Not because I didn’t want to help, but because I knew he needed his own system. Soon, momentum kicked in, and the garage was thoroughly cleaned and decluttered. We even gifted him a sturdy new tool bag to organize everything just the way he likes. With a final touch-up, our mudroom is now fully functional and ready to serve us all, stress-free! “Silence is key!” The Wet, Muddy, Dirty floors The Problem: It’s one thing to have a place for wet shoes, but what about a dry area to step into? Without a “clean zone,” you’re often left hopping around or accidentally stepping back onto a wet patch. Mudroom Solution: Create a designated “clean zone” by placing a second mat a few feet away from your boot tray or mud area. This mat is strictly for dry, clean feet only, making it the ideal spot to step into after removing boots. By having two separate zones—one for wet boots and one for dry feet —you’re keeping the mudroom organized and functional. If you’re tight on space, use a small but absorbent mat that fits seamlessly within your setup. What About Those Reusable Shopping Bags? The Problem: They’re not only perfect for groceries but also a great way to be eco-friendly! But somehow, they seem to multiply overnight . They’re stashed away in closets, piled up in cabinets, or—worst of all—left at home just when you need them most! This often leads to a last-minute scramble at checkout or the purchase of even more bags, adding to the clutter. Mudroom Solution: Simplify your routine by setting up an assigned spot for your bags , either near the mudroom door or another easy-to-grab location. Make it a habit to place them straight into the car trunk after unpacking groceries so they’re always ready for your next shopping trip. To make this even easier, I started parking my car in reverse whenever possible—this way, the trunk is easily accessible for quick unloading and restocking. If you prefer to keep your bags in the mudroom, hang them on a hook or place them in storage bin s near the door. This way, they’re quick to grab on your way out, making eco-friendly shopping part of your routine while keeping your space neat and clutter-free! BONUS! Our 2 Favorite Garage Mudroom Additions: #1. Let your protein soak up all the flavors overnight — it’ll taste amazing and be ready to cook fast. 🔹 Chop Veggies Ahead of Time Wash and chop your veggies and store them in airtight containers. It’ll save you so much time (and cleanup!) during the week. 🔹 Make Freezer Meals in Batches Double your favorite recipes and freeze half. Keep It Simple and Flexible Let’s be real — I’ve totally been caught in the “no time to plan” cycle too! Scrambling at the last minute , grabbing a frozen batch of chicken, hoping it thaws in time… and then, mealtime hits. The chicken? Dry, tasteless. Unhappy family feeling forced to eat just to not upset me. I package and refrigerate, knowing that no one will eat it anyway! And yup — just to end up straight in the garbage. What a disappointment! Meal planning saves me from these kitchen fails every time. WHY Meal Plan?? Plan Your Menu WEEKLY A weekly menu is your best friend when it comes to staying organized and making meal prep more stress-free and enjoyable. Set one day a week to think and set a simple menu for the week. For us, we plan our weekly menu on Saturday or Sunday evenings. Everyone in the family will eat from these meals, so why not involve them in the decision making . Let each family member choose a meal that they'd like to eat this week. This will give them a sense of significance, that their opinion matters, AND will remove decision making responsibility off your shoulders! Check #6 for more ideas on HOW to involve the family. Don’t start with the recipes — start with YOUR CALENDAR! Check out the week ahead, any events coming up? Are you spending a night out? Got a crazy week with many events? Plan easy quick meals. Slower Monday? Try a new recipe or involve the kids in meal prep. Write it down: On a notebook, on a board, on your calendar, or on your phone. This will save you the hassle of trying to remember who chose what and when, etc. You'll thank yourself later ;) 2. Decide What PACE Works for You: Cooking, Simple Meals, Eating out Will you be cooking ? How many meals per week? Choose what fits your lifestyle . Other meals can be a mix of simple meals — think sandwiches, omelets, bagel —, left-over / frozen meals , ready-to-eat meals , ordering in or eating out! 🍏 Healthy Tips: Aim for home-cooked meals as much as possible! Research consistently shows that cooking at home helps families eat healthier and consume fewer processed foods. This also sets an example for the kids growing up with healthy eating habits! Eating out? keep nutritious choices in mind — balance your meals with proteins, veggies, and whole grains. Stay tuned! I have a dedicated post *coming soon* with tips on how to eat healthy when ordering in or eating out . 3. Plan for ALL MEALS Planning breakfast, lunch, supper, and snacks helps keep the whole day running smoothly. Breakfast : Overnight oats, smoothies, or make-ahead muffins. Lunch, work lunch and school lunch: Leftover bowls, wraps, or simple salads. Dinner/Supper: Check out number 2 above. Desserts and Snacks: Fresh fruit, yogurt, fruit purees, or energy bites. I recently bought this apple peeler and corer. It peels apples and cores them easily and perfectly. Just what I needed to easy and quick morning school lunch prep! Check it out here . What has been working for me: Over the years, I have found what works for me, my family and our lifestyle! On Sunday evenings, my family and I sit together and I ask them what is one meal they would love to eat that week. I plan to cook 3 meals per week . We often eat leftovers for next day's lunch . For other suppers, we opt for simple meals — think sandwiches, omelets, or pre-cooked options — and we allow ourselves one order-in or eat-out night. For breakfast , we make sure we have everything needed for tasty, healthy choices and give the kids two options each morning. At every meal and snack, we aim for a healthy source of protein. 4. Take Inventory and Build Your Grocery List Check for RECIPES based on your decided menu for needed ingredients. Take INVENTORY of pantry, fridge, and freezer to avoid overbuying. Update your GROCERY LIST throughout the week, and according to the week's planned menu. Go Grocery SHOPPING — or delegate! Ask your husband to go grocery Personally, I've developed a little system that makes grocery shopping so much smoother. Before we head out, I reorganize the grocery list based on where the items are located in the store we're going to. For example, if we’re shopping at IGA, I now have a good idea of where things are placed, so I group the list accordingly — produce first, then dairy, frozen, pantry, etc. It saves time, keeps us from backtracking, and makes the whole trip feel way more efficient! Check out our 7 Mudroom’s Biggest Problems and Easy Fixes to give you helpful tips for smoother going in and out of the house. 5. Prep Ingredients in Advance Prepping ahead saves you time, reduces stress, and minimizes food waste. Pre-portion snacks into grab-and-go containers. Pre-marinate proteins or chop veggies ahead of time. Batch cook staples like rice, beans, or roasted veggies. Want to see this in action? Check out how I cooked 2 meals AND pre-prepped for 8 in under 2 hours (including pot-washing!) right here: 7 Kitchen, Recipes & Cooking Hacks You’ll Wish You Learned Ages Ago 6. Make It a Family Team-Work Let the kids help with meal planning and simple cooking tasks. My 5-year-old loves being my little helper — especially in the kitchen! He often asks, “Please, can I make rice with you?” and of course, I let him join in. Sure, things take a bit longer when the kids are helping, but I absolutely love his curiosity and excitement to learn. Involve your husband in grocery shopping or prep , wherever he feels comfortable to pitch in. Make meals a time for connection , not stress. Do you relate? I’m blessed with a beautiful family, each with their own unique taste buds! While this is great, it definitely adds some pressure on my end to ensure every meal is just right — because if it’s not, it might just end up in the garbage . What a waste, right? That’s why I’ve developed a habit of including everyone in the meal planning process . Each family member gets to choose one meal they love and want to eat during the week — with the understanding that they’ll happily eat the others' choices too. This simple strategy helps everyone feel involved and valued, and it makes meals more enjoyable for all of us. Why not bring them into the rest of the process too? Not only does it help them feel included, but it also BUILDS ESSENTIAL LIFE SKILLS! 7. Keep It Simple and Flexible Don’t aim for perfection — your plan is a tool, not a rulebook. Swap meals around as needed during the week. Focus on progress over perfection — even partial planning helps! I’ll be honest — I haven’t reached any kind of “meal planning perfection,” and I don’t expect to. Healthy eating has always been important to me and my family, but so has keeping a balanced lifestyle — one that leaves room for connection, laughter, and quality time with the people we love. Being part of a family means knowing when to slow down. Sometimes, the best thing we can do isn’t checking off every task — it’s choosing a simple, no-fuss meal and sitting down together for a relaxed moment. So instead of letting cooking, cleaning, and the never-ending to-do list take over, why not make space for the moments that matter most? Final Thoughts on Healthy Meal Planning Meal planning doesn’t have to feel like a chore — it can be simple, flexible, and even fun when you find a system that works for you and your family. Remember, it’s not about doing it perfectly. It’s about creating a rhythm that brings peace to your home, nourishes your loved ones, and saves you from the last-minute stress we all know too well. We’ve got this — one meal at a time! 👉 Ready to take the first step? Try planning just a few meals this week and see how it transforms your day. Plan HOME FREE TIME ACTIVITIES 6. The Great SCREEN-TIME Debate: Find a Balance That Works 7. Let It Go (A Little): Lower the Organizational Expectation I remember the pure joy of getting a day off from school. The freedom of waking up with no agenda, no rush, no obligations. Just unlimited time to do whatever I wanted. And as a kid, time felt endless—one week was an eternity, stretching out with no end in sight. It was amazing. I want my kids to have that same feeling. I want them to wake up, excited for the day ahead, free to explore, play, and just be kids. I look forward to seeing them enjoy this week of freedom the way I once did. But then… reality hits. Just recently, my little one was sick. Not long after, two massive snowstorms closed school, forcing me to juggle work and childcare —a combination that, let’s be honest, rarely goes smoothly. I’m fortunate to actually have the option of working remotely, but that doesn’t make it easy. Trying to focus on work while also being there for my kids is a mental tug-of-war —the stress of needing to get things done, while also wanting to give my children the care and attention they deserve. They need me. They express it in all kinds of ways—some sweet, some… not so much. Meanwhile, work emergencies don’t wait. The frustration builds, they start acting out, and eventually, the easiest solution is handing over the electronics! "Just one hour." But then one turns into two. Then three. Until suddenly, they’ve spent all day on screens . And then comes the battle when it’s time to turn them off. The mood shifts, the bottled-up energy turns into sibling fights, and I’m left wondering… Is this really the fun, free day I had imagined? I know in my heart that this isn’t the kind of break I want for them—or for me. A Spring Break That Works for Everyone If I must choose a motto for my life, I would say it's: I don’t live to work. I work to live. My first priority is my family. I want to enjoy life, enjoy my husband and kids, and create memories that last. I want to teach them great values, play and laugh with them, and fill this home with warmth, love, and quality time that actually feels good for all of us. That’s why this spring break, I’m choosing to be intentional. Not rigid, not over-planned, but mindful of how we spend our time. I want a balance— a mix of fun, connection, rest, and creativity —so that by the end of the week, we all feel refreshed, not drained. The question is: How do we actually make that happen? How do we create a spring break that lets kids enjoy their well-earned freedom without turning into an overstimulated, screen-zombie free-for-all ? How do we juggle responsibilities while making sure we still have meaningful, memorable moments with our kids? And most importantly—how do we make sure that we don’t just survive the week, but actually enjoy it too ? I’ve been thinking about all of this, and I’ve come up with some simple, practical ways to make spring break work for everyone. Let’s dive into the strategies that can help us turn this break into something we’ll actually look back on with joy. How to Create a Spring Break Staycation With FUN Activities and Meals With the Kids Spring break shouldn’t feel like survival mode. It’s meant to be a time for connection, fun, and a little bit of breathing room —for both kids and parents. But finding that balance between structure and freedom, activity and rest, screens and real-life experiences can be a challenge. Instead of just winging it and hoping for the best , here’s a simple approach to make this break smoother, more enjoyable, and full of the kind of memories that actually last. 1. Set the Stage: What’s Your GAME PLAN? Before diving into activities, step back and think about the big picture . Are you working or off? If you’re working, when will you have focused time? If you're off, do you want a mix of outings and at-home days? Is your spouse off too? If so, divide and conquer or plan special family moments. Are you traveling or staycationing? If staying home, plan some out-of-home fun —More ideas below! Having a loose structure makes everything easier while still allowing for flexibility. 2. Get OUT & Explore: Plan Some Fun OUTINGS Even if you’re staying close to home, March Break doesn’t have to feel repetitive. A few planned outings can break up the week and keep kids excited! Outdoor Fun: Ice skating, sledding, tubing, a winter nature walk/hike, or a local farm visit. Indoor Activities: A trip to the museum, bowling, indoor playgrounds, a trampoline park, cinema, or a restaurant. Playdates & Family Meet-Ups: Schedule a day to meet up with your kids' friends, cousins or grandparents. This can give them a chance to play while giving you some social time too. If possible, spread these activities out rather than cramming them all into one day. 3. Home Sweet Home: Create a FLEXIBLE PLAN Once you've blocked out your calendar for when you'll be OUT , now is the time to plan our the rest of the time when you'll be home. For the days you’re at home, having a loose routine can help prevent boredom and constant “What are we doing next?” questions. 4. Start by SETTING MEAL TIMES & PLANNING THE MENU Take family requests to make meals more exciting. Mix it up! Will you be cooking , making simple meals like sandwiches and omelets , ordering in, eating out , allowing the kids explore their cooking skills?! The goal isn’t to pack the day with activities but to create a rhythm that makes the days feel full and intentional. 6. The Great SCREEN-TIME Debate: Find a Balance That Works If you're like me, you're bracing yourself for the screen-time battle. You want your kids to enjoy their break, but you also don’t want them glued to a screen from sunrise to sunset. The Struggle is Real Maybe you've been there—your child insists that "everyone else gets unlimited gaming" while you’re trying to set reasonable limits. Or perhaps you’ve seen how an hour of screens can quickly turn into three… or five… before you even realize it. The guilt creeps in. Should I let them have more? Am I being too strict? On the flip side, too much screen time can lead to cranky moods , constant requests for "just one more episode," and that glazed-over look that makes you wonder if their brains have officially turned to mush! So how do we find a balance that doesn’t make us feel like the bad guy or turn our kids into screen-obsessed zombies? Creating a Realistic & Enjoyable Screen Plan Here’s my approach: I aim for a middle ground—structured flexibility . Typically, our family rules are two hours of gaming and one to two hours of watching on weekends . But for March Break, I make an exception and allow up to three total hours per day. on weekdays It’s a special time, after all! A few strategies that help keep screen-time in check: ✔️ Screens as a privilege, not an expectation – In our house, my kids know that screen time is earned. It follows a completed task, a chore, or good behavior. No tasks done? No screens—simple as that. ✔️ No screens before noon – Mornings are for play, creativity, and getting things done. My kids know better than to even ask before lunch. ✔️ Encouraging better screen-time choices – If they’re going to be on screens, I love steering them toward educational, creative, or interactive apps rather than mindless scrolling. Check out these 3 Best Apps for Meaningful Screen Time ✔️ Get out and about! Staying home all day makes it too easy to fall into endless screen time. Planning a few out-of-home activities ( see #2 above for ideas ) helps break the cycle and keeps everyone engaged in real-world fun. Do I have this all figured out? Nope! Every family is different, and I still tweak our screen-time approach when needed. Some days it works great, and other days… not so much. But having a clear plan in place helps avoid constant negotiations (and power struggles). Want to optimize screen time instead of just limiting it? Check out these 3 Best Apps for Meaningful Screen Time —they make learning, exploring, and even monitoring screen time a breeze: 📱 Simply Piano – Turn screen time into music time! 🧪 MEL Science – Hands-on, interactive science learning. 🖥️ SentryPC – A parental control tool to set screen limits with ease. Use our PROMO CODE: S2L. And you'll get 50% off the first month Screens don’t have to be the enemy —they can be powerful tools for growth when used intentionally and with balance . Instead of battling over screen time, why not reframe it as an opportunity for your kids to learn, explore, and grow ? By setting thoughtful boundaries and choosing high-quality content, we can help our kids make the most of their screens—without letting them take over the break! 7. Let It Go (A Little): Lower the ORGANIZATIONAL EXPECTATIONS If you’re someone who loves a clean and clutter-free home, this might be the hardest part. I get it—I love a tidy house where my eyes can peacefully rest without toys and dishes everywhere. But I’m intentionally loosening my expectations this Spring Break . The dishes can wait a little. The toys can stay out a bit longer. The house will get messy, but choosing connection over constant cleanup is worth it . Instead of stressing over the mess, make cleanup part of a fun family activity —turn on music, set a timer, and make it a game. That way, we still reset the space without it feeling like a battle. Final Thought: Make Spring Break Staycation Work for You and the Kids! There’s no one-size-fits-all way to plan Spring Break. The best way to make it fun and stress-free is to be intentional, set expectations, and stay flexible. Have a general plan but leave room for spontaneity. Plan just enough activities to prevent boredom but not so many that you feel exhausted. Balance fun with downtime , so kids enjoy the week without overstimulation. Let go of perfection and focus on making memories instead of managing chaos . At the end of the day, kids won’t remember if the house was spotless or if every activity went perfectly. They’ll remember the time you spent together, the laughter, and the little moments that made the week special. So let’s make this a March Break that works for everyone! What’s your plan for March Break? Are you traveling, staycationing, or just going with the flow? Let me know in the comments!
